In around 1910, where you are standing now, this formal photograph of a wedding party was taken outside of the recently built No. 39 Colonial Road. This was one of the first houses built in this road and it was built by it's owner as half of a semi detached property (the adjacent half, No 41, was not built until nearly a decade later). It's also noticeable that the road at this time was unsurfaced. The road was actually put in later by the owners of No. 39 and allowed for more and more houses to be built as pockets of land were gradually sold off. This explains, in part, why there are so many different styles of property in Colonial Road, from the Edwardian, to the 1930's semi right up to the present day.
In the picture above you can see the original house (no.39) and the later addition on the right of no.41. At this time agricultural activities were taking place in the land behind.
